Air Canada Cancels Flights Ahead of Possible Weekend Strike

Air Canada flight cancellations are imminent as the airline braces for a potential strike by its flight attendants. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has given the airline a 72-hour notice, and with the two sides reaching an “impasse” in negotiations, Air Canada will start suspending flights on Thursday. The cancellations will continue into Friday, with a complete cessation expected by the weekend.

CUPE, representing over 10,000 flight attendants, is demanding better wages, work conditions, and adjustments to unpaid hours. The two parties have been negotiating since March but have yet to agree. The strike could begin as early as Saturday at 12:58 a.m. ET.

Why Are Air Canada Flights Being Cancelled?

Air Canada announced that flight cancellations will begin on Thursday, followed by more cancellations on Friday. However, Air Canada Express flights, operated by Jazz and PAL Airlines, will continue as usual. Flights operated by Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge will be significantly impacted, with a full suspension expected by the weekend.

The airline has allowed passengers to change flights for free if they booked between August 15 and August 18, provided the booking was made by August 13. This measure aims to alleviate disruptions from the ongoing labor dispute.

Disagreement Over Wages and Working Conditions

The dispute centers on wages, work rules, and the issue of unpaid hours. Air Canada has offered a 38% increase in global compensation, but CUPE believes this increase doesn’t reflect the current inflation rate.

Wesley Lesosky, president of the Air Canada component of CUPE, expressed hope that Air Canada would engage in good-faith negotiations. However, Air Canada insists that there is a significant gap between what the union is requesting and what the airline can provide.

The Government’s Role in the Dispute

Patty Hajdu, Canada’s Minister for Jobs and Families, is monitoring the situation but has not yet intervened. The government may step in if the strike causes significant disruptions.

Air Canada has informed passengers that refunds will be available if flights are cancelled, and the airline will rebook them on the first available flight. However, during peak summer travel, seat availability will be limited.

What’s at Stake for Passengers

The flight cancellations pose challenges for travelers. Affected passengers can explore alternative options with other carriers, but high demand during the summer months may limit seat availability. The airline has committed to rebooking customers as quickly as possible.

Additionally, passengers can reschedule their flights for free, provided they booked before August 13.

With the strike threat looming, Air Canada flight cancellations are likely to increase if no resolution is found. As the airline works to accommodate its passengers, this ongoing labor dispute highlights the important role that flight attendants play in maintaining smooth operations. The situation remains fluid, so travelers should stay informed and prepared for potential disruptions.
