Florida Sibling Showdown: LaVon Bracy Davis Defeats Brother Randolph Bracy in State Senate Primary

Florida state senate sibling rivalry election

Florida Democrat LaVon Bracy Davis Defeats Her Brother in Local Senate Race

ORLANDO, FL – June 25, 2025
In one of the more personal political battles of the year, LaVon Bracy Davis has defeated her brother, former state senator Randolph Bracy, in a closely watched Democratic primary for a Florida state senate seat.

Bracy Davis secured 42% of the vote, while her brother finished last out of four candidates with just 12%, despite his prior legislative experience. The race drew attention not only for the high-profile candidates but also for its unusual family dynamics.

Family Loyalties—and Divides

The siblings’ mother, Lavon Wright Bracy, served as campaign manager for her daughter, a role she confirmed on Instagram. Meanwhile, their late family friend, civil rights icon Geraldine Thompson, who previously held the seat, had also endorsed Bracy Davis before her death.

Adding to the intrigue, Thompson’s family backed Bracy Davis as well. On her campaign website, Davis describes herself as carrying forward Thompson’s legacy of “justice, progress, and service.”

By contrast, Randolph Bracy’s campaign focused on his father’s contributions to the community, with no mention of his mother. Speaking to the Orlando Sentinel, Bracy described his sister’s candidacy as “disappointing and hurtful.”

Not the First Time They’ve Clashed Politically

This is not the first political split between the siblings. In 2024, when Randolph Bracy challenged Geraldine Thompson in a Democratic primary, LaVon Bracy Davis publicly supported Thompson.

Both siblings are experienced public servants: Davis previously served in the Florida House, while her brother held a state senate seat before launching an unsuccessful congressional bid in 2022.

Election Results and What’s Next

Bracy Davis now advances to face Republican Willie Montague in the September general election. But with the district firmly in Democratic territory, her victory in the primary likely secures her the seat.

The two other Democratic candidates in the race were:

  • Coretta Anthony-Smith, a personal injury lawyer
  • Alan Grayson, former U.S. Congressman

Despite Montague’s efforts—including campaign flyers poking fun at the sibling rivalry with the phrase “Bracy yourself”—analysts say the district’s deep blue lean makes a GOP win unlikely.

Related Political Family Feuds

While political sibling rivalries are rare, they’re not unheard of:

  • In 1871, three Saulsbury brothers competed for a U.S. Senate seat in Delaware, with one brother helping another win by sabotaging a third.
  • In Canada’s 2019 elections, three sets of siblings ran for office—though only one pair ran against each other.
