Canada Post Strike Disrupts Mail Across Simcoe and Muskoka

The nationwide Canada Post strike has started, disrupting mail delivery across the country, including Simcoe County and Muskoka. Residents now face delays in receiving and sending bills, payments, and other important documents.

Municipalities across the region stress that deadlines still apply despite the labour action. The City of Barrie says residents must pay property taxes, water and wastewater bills, and fines on time. People can pay through online banking or third-party providers. They can also make in-person payments at banks, Service Barrie at City Hall, or by dropping a cheque in the secure box at 70 Collier Street. Pre-authorized payment plans remain available for property taxes, and the City encourages residents to sign up for e-billing for water accounts. Court Services payments and trial requests can be made online, by phone, or at Service Barrie.

In Innisfil, officials confirm that residents can pay property taxes online, through telephone banking, or in person at Town Hall. The after-hours drop box offers another option. Residents can pay parking tickets and speed camera fines online or in person. Other services, including burn permits, marriage ceremonies, and dog tag renewals, remain available through the eServices portal.

The District of Muskoka explains that the strike affects Ontario Works clients and people making water or sewer payments. Staff will not mail cheques during the disruption, but clients can pick them up at Community Service Hubs in Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, or Huntsville. Residents can still pay water and sewer bills through pre-authorized debit, online banking, financial institutions, or at District offices. People with provincial offences tickets can pay online at paytickets.ca or in person at court offices.

Local leaders urge residents to plan ahead. They remind people that bills, fines, and taxes still carry their regular deadlines. To avoid penalties, residents should use digital tools, pre-authorized payments, or in-person options.

Postal workers launched the Canada Post strike after the federal government confirmed plans to phase out door-to-door mail delivery within the next decade. The union argues that this decision will eliminate thousands of jobs, raising tensions between workers and management.
