The Canada goose (Branta canadensis) is a large migratory waterfowl recognized by its black head and neck, white chinstrap, and brown body. Native to North America, it inhabits regions from the Arctic tundra to temperate wetlands and is commonly associated with lakes, rivers, marshes, and coastal areas. Its adaptability has allowed it to thrive in urban parks, golf courses, and agricultural land, making it one of the most widespread and recognizable birds in North America.

The species has also been introduced to Europe, New Zealand, Japan, and South America, where established populations are now common. While admired for its iconic V-shaped migration flights and honking calls, the Canada goose is often seen as a pest species in urban environments due to its droppings, grazing, and aggressive territorial behavior.

Taxonomy and Subspecies

The Canada goose was first described in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus in his work Systema Naturae. It belongs to the Branta genus, which includes black-plumaged geese such as the barnacle goose and Hawaiian goose. The species epithet canadensis means “from Canada.”

There are seven recognized subspecies, varying in size and plumage:

  • Atlantic Canada goose (B. c. canadensis)
  • Interior Canada goose (B. c. interior)
  • Giant Canada goose (B. c. maxima)
  • Moffitt’s Canada goose (B. c. moffitti)
  • Vancouver Canada goose (B. c. fulva)
  • Dusky Canada goose (B. c. occidentalis)
  • Lesser Canada goose (B. c. parvipes)

The giant Canada goose is the largest, with some males exceeding 10 kg in weight and wingspans over 2 meters, while the lesser Canada goose is similar in size to a mallard duck.

Description and Behavior

The Canada goose ranges from 75 to 110 cm in length, with a wingspan between 127 and 185 cm. Males average 3.9 kg, while females are slightly smaller at 3.6 kg. Despite the size differences across subspecies, all share the distinctive black head and neck with a white chinstrap.

They are highly vocal birds, producing a variety of calls including the well-known honk. Canada geese are monogamous, forming lifelong pair bonds. They are strongly territorial during nesting season, with both parents defending their eggs and goslings aggressively against predators and humans.

Their diet is primarily herbivorous, consisting of grasses, aquatic plants, and agricultural grains, though they occasionally consume insects and small fish. In urban settings, they graze on lawns and are often seen scavenging or begging for food.

Habitat and Migration

The Canada goose breeds across Canada and the northern United States, with large populations in the Great Lakes, prairies, and Arctic tundra. Traditionally migratory, many flocks travel thousands of kilometers each year between northern breeding grounds and southern wintering areas. Their V-formation flight reduces drag and conserves energy, allowing long-distance migration.

However, in recent decades, many populations have become non-migratory due to abundant food and absence of predators in urban environments. Year-round populations now exist along the Atlantic Coast, Pacific Coast, and parts of the Midwest and South, including states such as Florida and North Carolina.

Outside North America, introduced populations in the UK, Scandinavia, New Zealand, and Argentina have flourished, sometimes displacing native waterfowl and damaging crops.

Reproduction and Lifespan

Canada geese typically breed at two years of age. The female lays 2–9 eggs in a nest near water, incubating for 24–32 days while the male guards the territory. Goslings are precocial, walking and swimming soon after hatching, and remain with their parents until after migration.

Adults undergo an annual molt in summer, losing their flight feathers for several weeks until regrowth coincides with their offspring becoming fledglings. In the wild, Canada geese live 10–24 years, with some surviving beyond 30 years.

Conservation and Human Interaction

The Canada goose is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List due to its widespread distribution and large, stable populations. However, its success in urban areas has created conflicts with humans. Overgrazing, droppings in parks and lakes, and aircraft collisions have made them a management concern.

One of the most famous incidents occurred in 2009, when US Airways Flight 1549 struck a flock of Canada geese, forcing Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger to land the aircraft in the Hudson River without loss of life. This event highlighted the risks of bird strikes involving large waterfowl.

While hunting remains a traditional use of Canada geese, regulations under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (U.S.) and Migratory Birds Convention Act (Canada) protect populations outside hunting seasons. In some regions, wildlife agencies use culling, egg addling, and relocation programs to manage urban populations.
