Cody Jay Canada (born May 25, 1976) is an American rock and alternative country musician, best known as the lead vocalist and guitarist of Cross Canadian Ragweed and later Cody Canada and The Departed. Active since the mid-1990s, he has become a prominent figure in the Red Dirt music scene, blending rock, outlaw country, and Americana influences.
Early Life
Cody Canada was born in Pampa, Texas, and developed an interest in music at an early age. At just four years old, he attended a George Strait concert with his parents, which inspired him to ask for his first guitar the following day. By the age of eight, he was actively playing.
During his teenage years, Canada’s family relocated to Yukon, Oklahoma. His musical influences expanded to include Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and outlaw country artists, shaping the unique fusion of styles he would later bring to his bands.
Cross Canadian Ragweed
In 1994, Canada co-founded Cross Canadian Ragweed with bassist Matt Weidemann, guitarist Grady Cross, and drummer Randy Ragsdale. The group’s name was derived from a combination of the members’ last names. Initially based in Yukon, the band later moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma, a hub for the Red Dirt music movement.
Cross Canadian Ragweed released seven studio albums and three live albums between 1994 and 2010, earning a devoted fan base across the southern United States. Known for their energetic performances and gritty songwriting, the band became one of the most influential acts in the Red Dirt scene.
In 2010, the band went on hiatus due to internal tensions and Ragsdale’s family commitments. By the end of the year, Cross Canadian Ragweed officially disbanded. However, in 2024, the band reunited, marking a return to the stage for its original lineup.
Cody Canada and The Departed
Following the breakup of Ragweed, Canada formed Cody Canada & The Departed in 2011, alongside bassist Jeremy Plato, guitarist Seth James, keyboardist Steve Littleton, and drummer Chris Doege.
- Their debut, This Is Indian Land (2011), was a covers album honoring Oklahoma songwriters.
- Their first original work, Adventus (2012), marked a shift to a heavier rock sound.
- In 2015, the band released Hippielovepunk, which debuted at No. 9 on both the Billboard US Country and US Indie charts, driven by the single Inbetweener, a return to Canada’s Red Dirt roots.
The Departed continued to evolve as a flexible collective, with Canada at the creative center.
Solo Work and Collaborations
Cody Canada has also pursued solo projects:
- 2013 – Released the live acoustic double album Some Old, Some New, Maybe a Cover or Two, featuring songs from both Cross Canadian Ragweed and The Departed.
- 2015 – Released Chip and Ray, Together Again for the First Time, a 35-track collaboration with Mike McClure, recorded in Port Aransas, Texas.
These projects highlighted his versatility as a songwriter and performer, bridging multiple eras of his career.
Personal Life
Canada is married to Shannon O’Neal Canada, who manages The Departed and their independent label, Underground Sound. The couple has two sons, Dierks Cobain Canada (named after Dierks Bentley and Kurt Cobain) and Willy Vedder Canada (named after Willy Braun and Eddie Vedder). Both sons play in a band called Waves in April, and have occasionally joined their father on stage.
Cody Canada is also the brother-in-law of fellow Red Dirt musician Wade Bowen. A Christian, he has referenced his faith in several Ragweed songs, including The President Song, Carry You Home, and When it All Goes Down. The family currently lives in New Braunfels, Texas.
