How to Apply for the DV Lottery: Step-by-Step Guide to Getting a U.S. Green Card

AMERICAN EMBASSY,THAILAND

🇺🇸 DV Lottery (Diversity Visa) Application: What You Need to Do

The DV Lottery is one of the easiest ways to get a U.S. green card, but only if you follow all the requirements carefully. Check out generalodhiambo.com

1. Confirm You Are Eligible

You must meet two requirements:

1. Country Eligibility

You must be born in an eligible country (Kenya is eligible).

2. Education or Experience Eligibility

You must have at least:

  • A high school certificate (KCSE or equivalent), OR
  • 2 years of qualifying work experience in the last 5 years

2. Prepare Your Photos

You MUST have:

  • Recent photo (taken within 6 months)
  • White background
  • No shadows, no filters
  • Correct size (600×600 pixels)

A wrong photo disqualifies you instantly, even if you win.

3. Submit the Online Application (During the Application Window)

The DV Lottery is FREE and only submitted on the official website:

👉 dvprogram.state.gov

You must fill the online form with:

  • Full name (exactly as in passport)
  • Date of birth
  • Place of birth
  • Passport number (sometimes required)
  • Marital status (must be 100% accurate)
  • Number of children
  • Recent photo(s)

When you finish, you will receive a confirmation number — keep it safe. Without it, you cannot check if you won.

4. Wait for the Results (May of the Following Year)

Winners are selected by computer.
Results are checked at:

👉 dvprogram.state.gov/ESC

If selected, you will see:

  • “You have been selected…”

This is NOT the visa. It only means you can continue.

5. Fill the DS-260 Form

If selected, log in and complete the DS-260 Immigrant Visa Form.

You will submit:

  • Your passport details
  • Your education history
  • Employment history
  • Home address
  • Travel history
  • Police information

Make sure everything is truthful. Mistakes can lead to denial.

6. Gather Supporting Documents

You must prepare:

  • Valid passport
  • Birth certificate
  • KCSE certificate or equivalent
  • Police clearance certificate
  • Passport photos
  • Marriage certificate (if married)
  • Divorce certificate (if divorced)
  • Medical records (from approved hospital ONLY)
  • Financial proof (bank statements, sponsor, or job offer)

7. Go for the Medical Examination

You must do your medical at an approved hospital (Panel Physician).
These are assigned by the U.S. Embassy—not just any clinic.

8. Attend Your U.S. Embassy Interview

Bring:

  • DS-260 confirmation page
  • Appointment letter
  • Original documents
  • Medical exam results
  • Police certificate
  • Photos
  • Financial proof

The officer will ask questions like:

  • What do you plan to do in the USA?
  • Who are you going to live with?
  • What is your education background?

If approved, they will take your passport.

9. Receive Your Visa

Your passport will come back with:

  • An immigrant visa
  • A sealed envelope (DO NOT OPEN)

You must enter the U.S. before the visa expires (typically 6 months from medical date).

10. Enter the United States

At the airport:

  • The immigration officer will review your sealed envelope.
  • You will receive a temporary stamp allowing you to live in the U.S.

Your physical green card will be mailed to your U.S. address.

🎯 Important Tips for DV Lottery Applicant

  • Only apply once per person — duplicates = automatic disqualification.
  • Use the correct photos, or your entry becomes invalid.
  • Never lie in your marital or child information.
  • Keep your confirmation number safely.
  • Do not pay anyone to “increase your chances” — the process is random.
