The Maple Ridge shooting has shocked the quiet community after three people died in a residential neighborhood overnight. British Columbia RCMP confirmed the tragic incident occurred following what began as a routine neighborhood dispute call earlier in the day.
Initially, Ridge Meadows RCMP responded to the 11800 block of 239th Street in Maple Ridge around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday. Officers arrived after receiving reports of a neighborhood dispute. During this initial Maple Ridge shooting response, police spoke with several individuals but made no arrests at that time.
However, the situation escalated dramatically hours later. Just before 11 p.m., emergency services received reports of a vehicle fire and an active break-in at the same address. Subsequently, additional callers reported hearing gunshots in the area. These developments transformed what seemed like a minor neighborhood disagreement into a deadly confrontation.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered two vehicles and an attached garage fully engulfed in flames. Tragically, firefighters and police found two people dead inside the home. The Maple Ridge shooting investigation revealed these victims were a man and woman in their 60s, according to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.
Mounties reported that the suspected shooter was believed to be armed and had barricaded himself in a neighboring home. Consequently, police established a containment perimeter around the area. He went outside and witnessed two vehicles completely engulfed in flames. “Both vehicles were totally engulfed, like big fireballs,” he described to reporters.
Another neighbor, Andrew Palahicky, was awakened around 2:30 a.m. by what he initially thought was a flashbang explosion. He observed the fire at the nearby home and saw police with rifles cutting into the garage. Palahicky mentioned he knew the suspect’s children from school, though he didn’t know the elderly couple well.
Both neighbors emphasized how unusual this level of violence is for their community. Palahicky noted that the area is typically “uneventful” and considered one of the safest parts of Maple Ridge. The sudden chaos left residents struggling to comprehend what happened.
Fairweather echoed these sentiments about his neighborhood’s usual tranquility. He expressed disbelief at losing his neighbors so suddenly. “I can’t believe they’re not here today. I mean, they were here, talking to her yesterday,” he said. “It’s just kind of mind-boggling, actually.”
