A shocking Pickering Ontario stabbing has left an elderly woman dead and a 13-year-old boy in police custody. Officers arrested the teen three hours after issuing an emergency alert to nearby residents. Charges are pending.
Durham Regional Police issued the alert at 5:40 p.m., asking people near Lynn Heights Drive and Fairport Road to shelter in place. Authorities found and arrested the boy around 8:30 p.m., safely ending the lockdown. Officials confirmed there was no further threat to the public.
The attack happened outside the woman’s home. According to police, the boy—who did not know her—approached and stabbed her multiple times. A passerby found her with serious injuries and called emergency services. Paramedics rushed her to a trauma centre in the Toronto area, but she died shortly after arrival.
Police reviewed video footage, which captured the brutal and unprovoked attack. The suspect fled on foot into nearby woods before officers arrived. Investigators launched a major search using a helicopter, canine units, and tactical teams. Officers from Toronto and the Ontario Provincial Police helped in the effort.
Police Chief Peter Moreira called the incident “sadistic and cowardly.” He said the victim was simply standing outside her home. Her actions, he emphasized, did not contribute to the crime. Investigators have not yet identified a motive.
Tyler Dunstan, a resident since 2010, said he returned home that day to see police cars across the street. He recognized the victim from previous encounters, recalling her tending her garden or strolling the neighborhood. Dunstan described the event as terrifying. “We’ve never seen anything like this,” he said.
The City of Pickering responded quickly. Officials shut down all public facilities, including libraries and community centres. Mayor Kevin Ashe supported the decision, saying it was the right move in an extraordinary situation. Although some parents were caught off guard at local centres, most cooperated calmly and respectfully.
Mayor Ashe expressed his sorrow during a press briefing. He reminded residents that Pickering is a peaceful city, making this act of violence even more disturbing. On behalf of the community, he offered heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family. He also called on residents to support one another in the aftermath of this tragedy.
