Trump Sends More Troops to Los Angeles, Newsom Calls Action ‘Deranged’
President Donald Trump has escalated tensions in Los Angeles by deploying thousands more troops to the city amid ongoing protests over aggressive immigration raids. The move has sparked a political and legal showdown with California Governor Gavin Newsom, who labeled the deployment a “deranged fantasy of a dictatorial president.”
The U.S. government doubled the National Guard presence in LA to 4,000 and added 700 U.S. Marines from Twentynine Palms to protect federal agents and facilities. The troop surge comes without the governor’s consent—a rare step not seen since 1965.
California has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, accusing it of violating the Constitution by deploying troops without state approval. Local officials say the additional military presence is unnecessary, noting that protests remain largely peaceful and manageable.
The unrest began after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers launched surprise raids in Latino neighborhoods. Over the weekend, demonstrations turned chaotic, with reports of looting, vandalism, and attacks on police. Authorities confirmed arrests of at least 50 individuals, with charges ranging from looting to attempted murder.
Los Angeles police used stun grenades and tear gas to disperse protesters outside a downtown federal detention center. National Guard troops formed barriers as demonstrators clashed with officers. Meanwhile, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that a suspect accused of attacking federal agents would be placed on the Most Wanted list.
Trump defended the troop deployment, claiming it prevented LA from “burning down.” On social media, he issued a harsh warning to protesters: “IF THEY SPIT, WE WILL HIT… harder than ever before.”
Governor Newsom responded forcefully, saying the president’s actions were about “stroking a dangerous ego,” while LA Mayor Karen Bass accused the administration of intentionally stirring chaos. She also confirmed ICE carried out at least five raids on Monday, one near her grandson’s school.
Despite the controversy, Trump doubled down on his hardline immigration agenda. He criticized the Biden administration for allowing illegal crossings and vowed to carry out 3,000 deportations per day if re-elected.
Whether the courts will stop Trump’s federal intervention in LA remains to be seen. But for now, the city stands at the center of a heated national battle over immigration, federal authority, and the limits of presidential power.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3yoWMc2WIs
