Trump Unveils Ambitious ‘Golden Dome’ Defense Shield for U.S.
President Donald Trump has announced plans for a sweeping new missile defense initiative called the Golden Dome, a high-tech shield designed to protect the United States from next-generation aerial threats, including missiles launched from other continents—or even space.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump confirmed that the Defense Department has selected a design for the system, which he vows will be operational before the end of his second term.
Massive Budget, Massive Scope
The initial budget allocates $25 billion for the project, but defense analysts warn the final cost could soar. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the space-based portion alone could exceed $542 billion over 20 years.
Trump said the Golden Dome would involve land, sea, and space-based interceptors, guided by next-gen tracking satellites, making it capable of neutralizing threats ranging from ballistic missiles to hypersonic weapons and space-based attacks like fractional orbital bombardment systems (FOBS).
Inspired by Israel, But Much Bigger
The project draws inspiration from Israel’s Iron Dome, but experts note the scale is entirely different. The U.S. faces broader geographical challenges and more diverse threats.
“The U.S. version would require thousands of satellites and space interceptors,” said Shashank Joshi, defense editor at The Economist. “It’s an incredibly ambitious plan that likely won’t be completed during Trump’s current term.”
Global Interest and Strategic Impact
Canada has already expressed interest in joining the initiative. Former Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair called it a “strategic priority” earlier this year during his visit to Washington.
The system will be overseen by Space Force General Michael Guetlein under a centralized command, according to U.S. defense officials.
Skepticism and Strategic Tensions
Critics question whether the U.S. can realistically develop a fully comprehensive defense for such a vast territory. A Defense Intelligence Agency briefing noted that China and Russia are designing weapons to bypass current U.S. defenses, including advanced missile systems capable of exploiting gaps.
Experts also worry about the program’s financial burden. With escalating global tensions and new military priorities, dedicating such a large share of the defense budget to a long-term missile shield could create funding pressures elsewhere.
Still, Trump described the Golden Dome as “a generational investment in the safety of America,” framing it as a central pillar of his national defense strategy.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX2hxzUP8Fs
