Putin and Trump Set for High-Stakes Alaska Summit

Alaska summit talks

As US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin prepare for the Alaska summit talks, both leaders arrive with sharply different goals for Friday’s meeting on ending the war in Ukraine.

For Putin, the summit already delivers a key win: recognition. The very fact that the US, long a driving force behind efforts to isolate Moscow, is hosting him signals a diplomatic return to the global stage. Alaska, with its proximity to Russia and distance from Europe, offers security, symbolism, and a chance to bypass Kyiv and EU leaders for direct talks with Washington.

Putin’s central demand remains firm — Ukraine must cede the four occupied regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson, with Kyiv withdrawing from areas still under its control. Such terms are unacceptable to Ukraine, but the Kremlin may calculate that if Trump backs these demands, Kyiv’s rejection could prompt Washington to cut support, paving the way for closer US-Russia ties.

Trump’s intentions are harder to pin down. Throughout his presidency, he has promised to end the Ukraine war “in days,” while oscillating between frustration with both Kyiv and Moscow. He has temporarily suspended US aid to Ukraine, threatened sanctions, then backed away. In recent days, he has lowered expectations, calling the summit a “feel-out” meeting, yet still hints at a potential breakthrough.

Trump has floated “land-swapping” ideas — worrying Kyiv — and speaks openly about wanting to be remembered as a global peacemaker, even hinting at Nobel Peace Prize ambitions. While his style avoids policy details, any opportunity to claim progress could be seized, particularly if it bolsters his legacy.

For both men, the summit offers more than just discussion on Ukraine. Putin may aim to leverage Trump’s desire for a historic deal to secure concessions on Russia’s terms. Trump, for his part, may seek a headline-making moment that shows he can broker peace where others have failed.

As the Alaska summit talks approach, European leaders are urging caution, warning Trump not to agree to terms Ukraine cannot accept. For now, the outcome remains uncertain — but the stakes, for Ukraine, Europe, and US-Russia relations, could not be higher.
